Out of everything that Kane accomplished in his life, he chooses "Rosebud" as his dying word. Why do you think that this memory is so important to him compared to every other memory he has had?
It seems to me like Kane really was only concerned with himself as others in the film keep pointing out. Perhaps "Rosebud" was one of the few things he sincerely cherished.
"Rosebud" was his last word because his childhood memory of his sled, at the end of the movie when they are burning the sled that said "rosebud" and that's how we find out about Rosebud.
